Hey guys! I realize I’ve really been lazy about updating the status of some video games that are being announced and released, so I decided to have a little post that’ll talk about some stuff that’s been going on in that department! There are some exciting stuff happening, but also a few disappointments that I want to touch on.
From the title, I guess you can tell that there has been some STUFF. I want to mention Nintendo as well, since they never let me down with their game announcements, but Square Enix, man, I don’t know what’s up with them. Honestly, I’m a little worried about the future of that company. First of all, though, I’d like to talk about a new game Nintendo will be releasing in a couple weeks, and that is Fire Emblem: Three Hopes!
I’ve been REALLY wanting a new Fire Emblem game, and my prayers were answered during a Nintendo Direct in February. In fact, they opened the direct with a gorgeous new trailer for Three Hopes. And if that sounds a little like Three Houses, it’s because the two are directly related! I was super excited to find out this new Fire Emblem game would be tied to Three Houses, because I LOVE that game a lot, and I wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to those characters (which is why I replay the game a lot, haha!). There’s another game called Fire Emblem: Warriors, which I played a little bit of, but Three Hopes will be a lot like that game in terms of gameplay.
The characters all got redesigned, and some of them are amazing! My best boi Prince Dimitri is looking good, haha! I’ll definitely be joining the Blue Lions again. As for the story, I can’t decide whether this is an alternate universe, or if it actually takes place during the five year time skip in Three Houses. That would be a little strange, considering that Byleth was revealed to be the main villain in Three Hopes, and in the original game, he/she was a little unavailable. I guess we’ll see when the game releases on June 24th for the Nintendo Switch!
I’d like to keep this somewhat short so I can post it as soon as possible, so I’m going to discuss Square Enix for a bit. If you didn’t know, E3 (aka the biggest gaming convention in the world) was canceled, so we won’t be able to see all these amazing companies get together to show off their games. Summer Game Fest is still on for tomorrow, but I’m honestly wondering what the heck Square Enix is doing. They confirmed their presence during the Game Fest, but weirdly enough, they started showing trailers for new games a week beforehand.
Last month, Square Enix teased they would release new information regarding the second part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake in June. I assume they mean they will do so at the Summer Game Fest, but according to the host, Geoff Keighley, we are not supposed to get our hopes high for mind-crushing announcements tomorrow. I’m not sure what what his definition of huge announcements are, but like, if they talk about Remake 2 then that’s sort of huge. They haven’t said a word about it in forever, and it’s been a while since the first part released. Does this mean we won’t be getting at a least a teaser anytime soon? I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Square Enix chose to remain silent about the Remake tomorrow and wait for their own Direct to officially announce part two, but if that were to be the case, what the heck would they talk about? We already know mum’s the word with Kingdom Hearts 4 for the time being. The only thing I can think of is that they might talk more about Final Fantasy 16 and the new Dragon Quest games coming out eventually, but what’s weird about that is the fact they chose to release trailers for those games early at Sony’s State of Play.
Yep, you read that right. After two years of silence on Final Fantasy 16, Square Enix dropped a trailer for it, and I have to say I’m impressed. I can see they are returning to the roots of Final Fantasy in regards to the story, but I’m not that big of a fan with the gameplay. But my biggest concern is that they are choosing to make this game rated M, marking this as the third FF title to have a mature rating, and the first mainline FF game to have one as well. Way back when, SE stated that the reason they didn’t like making M rated games was because they didn’t sell as good. Up to date, the only M rated FF titles were the spinoffs, Type-0 and the recent Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins. Yes, Origins looked like an amazing game, but y’all, I can’t be playing these M rated games. I got about one minute into Type-0 before calling it quits and never looking back. So that’s why I’m a little hesitant to be excited about the newest Final Fantasy game, even though the trailer is awesome. You can watch it below…
I love the fact that they’re including the summons in this story so heavily, and the main art is SO PRETTY. It got me all nostalgic for the older FFs! But, again, if this is going to be an M rated game, I might have to skip out…again.
Anyway, aside from FF16, they also released an adorable teaser for the Dragon Quest 11 spinoff, which my sister has been waiting on for a while, haha! Check it out!
Adorable! Erik was one of my favorite characters in Dragon Quest 11, so I’m excited to see him as a kid going on adventures with his little sister.
Aside from new video games, there’s something else going on with Square Enix, and that is the fact that Square Enix has been selling off some of their studios. So far they have sold Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal, and Eidos Montreal. They have also sold Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, etc. There have also been rumors that Sony is going to buy Square Enix. I don’t know entirely what this would entail, but I can’t say I have a good feeling about it. According to leaks, Square Enix’s finances haven’t been entirely stable, so it brings my mind back to when Final Fantasy was first created when Square almost went down the drain.
After the failures that were Balan Wonderworld and Babylon’s Fall, I think what SE really needs to do is take care of their to-be-released games. This includes the new FF games, particularly the Remake and Final Fantasy 16. Dragon Quest 12 will be coming eventually, and then of course the new Kingdom Hearts games. Because they are SE’s biggest titles, I think if they succeed, Square Enix will be set.
That’s really all I wanted to talk about, so definitely share your thoughts if you have any! I’d love to see what you guys think about all this! I’ll probably be doing something for the Summer Game Fest if I get the chance, so keep a lookout for that!
As always, God bless y’all and have a wonderful rest of the week!
