Hey guys! So back in October 2021, one the day it was revealed that Sora would be the final Smash Brothers Ultimate character, we were also surprised with the fact that the entirety of the Kingdom Hearts series would be available on the Nintendo Switch. A couple days ago, we learned that would be starting on February 10th. However, if you’ve been keeping up with that news, you know that people are NOT happy about this.
I was originally going to just do a simple post with the release date reveal, but I decided to go a bit deeper and discuss the unhappiness of the Kingdom Hearts fandom and give my opinion on the whole matter. So first off, let’s take a look at what exactly is being revealed here. You can watch the trailer first…
It’s a beautiful trailer! As you saw, every Kingdom Hearts game excluding Union X and Dark Road will be moving to the Nintendo Switch at long last. This is what we’ve been waiting for, right? So what has everyone so angry? Well, it would be the part where it says “cloud version”. What does that mean?
Basically, you cannot play Kingdom Hearts on the Switch without an internet connection. If that internet connection drops for one reason or another, so does the game. The games are not technically “yours”, per say, they rather belong to the cloud. And just realize that you will be having to pay for them to play, too.
Fans of the series are angry because after we’ve been waiting so long to see Kingdom Hearts on the Switch, they bring this to the table. I mean, what’s the point of having it on a device you can play on the go when you can’t, you know, play on the go? A little more than weird, don’t you think? And the entire series, despite only having the movie versions of 358/2 and Re:Coded, will come with a hefty price tag of $90. Honestly, in my opinion, that’s a pretty good price. But if I was paying that much, I’d want to be able to play the actual versions of the game instead of the cloud versions.
Really, I just have to ask what Square Enix was thinking when they did this. We already have the most recent Kingdom Hearts installment, Melody of Memory, on the Switch, and it isn’t a cloud version. So what’s the big deal here? Was it laziness? Do they have something up their sleeve than we just can’t understand right now?
I’m not really picky when it comes to stuff that would usually make other gamers angry. I’m too chill to get that angry. And yeah, I’m not that mad about this, but it does annoy me. I’m a diehard Kingdom Hearts fan, and I probably would have bought the entire series for the Switch even though I’ve played the games multiple times and I own the majority of the games on Xbox. In fact, I would have been more than happy to buy it! But it feels like Square Enix isn’t really taking this seriously, which is a little disappointing considering that this year is the 20th anniversary for Kingdom Hearts.
All I can say is this: “Oh well.” I’ve got most of the series on Xbox, as I mentioned, and while I would have liked the Switch version to go with Melody of Memory, it’s not the end of the world by far. I just wonder what SE’s motives are, and if they’ll attempt to appease the fandom with a big reveal…
What do you think about all this? Let me know in the comments below!
As always, God bless y’all and have a wonderful rest of the week!
